How Do I Make A Website?

15FEB08 – Making a website requires three things so that people who visit on the Internet have something to see that belongs to you.

Get a name.

The fickle bit of all is what the name of your website will be. In computer language, your website’s location on the Internet is a series of numbers (IPv4) or numbers and letters (IPv6). Since no one finds 72.14.207.99 very attractive or easy to remember, we type in WWW dot GOOGLE dot COM and machines translate this request into the numbers it needs to without disturbing your day.

Your website will be a happier place if the NAME of the website makes sense. If your site is about cats, how about using the word CAT in the site’s URL or name. For example, this site is about computers and run by computer tutors. DINARIUS makes no sense. Learn from our mistake. Getting a name will cost you money, but not much. Popular sellers of URL’s or DOMAIN NAMES include Network Solutions and Go Daddy.

Attach your name to some storage space.

Your name alone is basically nothing. When people try to visit the DOMAIN NAME of your site, they will see that the name is taken, but that’s all. Before you make it look like what you want it to look like, you have to be sure that your DOMAIN NAME is pointed at some storage space. If your computer had no storage space, you would have a screen and mouse with no information behind it – so we always need to have storage space.

When making a website, storage space is the biggest con of all. Beginning computer users will be confused by a whirlwind of new terms and strange services. Storage space is measured in MEGABYTES and GIGABYTES (Gigabytes are bigger by a thousand times). All else is secondary. If you can afford the storage space being offered, it’s right for you as a beginner making a website.

Fill your storage space with what people should see.

A DOMAIN NAME that points to empty storage will still show nothing until you put something there. The first thing ALL visiting applications look for is a little FILE called index. When making a website, you want to be sure that you have what’s known as FTP ACCESS. File Transfer Protocol allows you to move files and pictures and videos and music to your storage space just the same way you would move files and pictures and videos and music on your computer. The only different is that this FOLDER is a website on another STORAGE system or hard drive.

Don’t be scared. For the year, you’ve only spent about $100 so far. You have a name that no one else can have; you have storage space to put the information you want to share, and now you have a way of getting your information there (FTP ACCESS). In asking, how do I make a website, be sure you have those three steps complete so that a website builder doesn’t over-charge you or trick you in some way.

Bryan has dealt with very smart people in the past. Surprisingly, these fine and regular professionals still don’t know the first thing about these first three steps to securing a website no matter how simple, complex, ugly or beautiful the site will be. All steps following these first three are completely subjective and can vary widely. Later, we’ll take a look at methods to creating different types of sites that fulfill different functions.
