GoodTV: Common iPhone Questions.

22JAN08 – Embedding videos and RSS details and podcast promotion is a riot all at once, so we’re determined to mess this up as gracefully as possible. Our new iPhone has lead to a host of new questions from people unafraid, once again, to discuss technology. It’s been a while. Everyone loves the iPhone and there’s a lot to be curious about. We haven’t shot to video for over a year and it shows. We’re linking you here to a 12 and-a-half minutes video with a great voice over and inviting you to ask any unanswered questions below in the Comments.

Not everyone can see that MediaPlayer plugin above, so here’s the link to the raw WMV file:

http://www.dinarius.com/EMBrm/iPhone_vid.wmv or click here and save or open the file. It’s 48.5MB in size. The iPhone can’t actually see this file. We get the irony; we’re working on it. It seems some chipmunks have hidden a vital cable needed in the conversion process.

Is there a stylus for the iPhone? No; just use any of your ten fingers (God willing). Can I plug my computer into it and get the Internet that way? No; the iPhone is not a modem, it’s a cell phone. It cannot deliver the Internet to your laptop though that’s a good idea. Does the iPhone play videos? Easily and frequently. How many different kinds of iPhone are there? 2 as of this answer; there is a 4GB and an 8GB and my own 469 songs take up no more than 2GB when they’re soaking wet. Does the iPhone scratch easily? No; we still very strongly recommend that you fetch a hard-shell case to be safe. There’s a cottage industry around iPhones, iPods, Nanos and the iTouch (which is the iPod, Touch) and you’re sure to find something that will protect your investment from you.

Can I change the iPhone battery? No; Apple has delighted in making battery access right next door to impossible and the iPhone is no different. Will my stolen iPhone work? Yes until it ‘calls home.’ Apple was smart to require iTunes to activate the phone and verify a bunch of product details with the AT&T store from whence it came. Stolen iPhones will fail and be turned off within the first month if not week of use. Can I charge the iPhone with my iPod charger? Yes! Witty and wise is Apple for allowing the DOCK on the iPhone to work with most docking devices that also accept my GEN5 iPod. Other GENerations, possibly other outcomes. Can the iPhone dock to my iPod-friendly radio, amplifier, sound station, player, speakers, whatever? Yes; read the previous Q/A.

Undoubtedly, between the 12:30 minute video and extra typed questions above, I missed the question that’s burning you. So write it in below and get an A for your burning Q.

  1. Very entertaining, but whatever happened to basic communications. For us Luddites simple and utilitarian is better.

Well, better saddle up old Dobbin and ride back to the ranch.

  2. It’s not for me to say that the iPhone and partners in crime won’t abandon many people; it’s a sleek and sexy way to forget that that ‘basic communication’ is still very much in the control of big companies. AT&T has me fingering this thing for a solid two years. The easier it is for me to forget that, the better.

“Utilitarian,” is a little more subjective than it used to be. I neglected to mention the Google Maps and pending GPS feature.

As for your horse, it’s not too much to ask that you use the Jag, is it?

  3. My comments match #1 above, although I cannot get the video to play; it’s a blank, black screen with buttons that do nothing. Ah, well; I just got snail mail from Sprint telling me that my (10-year old) cell’ ‘phone is about to be mooted because of an FCC ruling…that is to say, “your handset will no longer operate on these networks.” SPRINT says I’ll receive paper from them telling me what my new options are. Currently I’m paying $19.95 month for 150 free minutes and I seldom use them; no contract, either. They say my new “savings” will require a 2 year contract, monthly plan of $35 or higher, $36 activation fee, deposit (for what?), and a so-called equivalent new ‘phone costing about $200. Nice treatment for a loyal customer, huh? RDA

I submit another video by a well-respected master of technology. He points out other failings of the iPhone with quite a bit less flair.
