Beginning A Tag List With TXP TextPattern.

TAGS: , , , , , , ,

It’s nothing new to the Internet. Tag Lists are keywords authors create to help articles appear higher in search results when potential visitors use a search engine to find something. This /commentable area of Dinarius.com is powered by Textpattern, a.k.a. TXP. We’ll provide a little walk-through to the installation of the Tag Plug-in created by Nathan Arthur called tru-tags. It’s complex if you’re a new user, but the truth is, it’s not really complex…

Using tru_tags in Textpattern to tag a blog.

Most likely, you’ve seen TAGS millions of times on websites that offer regularly updated content about similar items of interest. A test site of ours is about Conceptual hardware and technology, GawkerComputers.com We find that tru-tags, an experimental installation, inserts that site in more Google searches than Dinarius.com could ever hope for. Hence, we’re installing tags on this site and offering a “tag cloud” which Textpattern plug-in tru-tags allows users to setup.

Blog Tag clouds Automatically gathered by frequency of use.

Tag clouds are automatically generated. The higher and larger the word/tag, the more often it appears OVERALL in the blog. You can set the largest boundaries and the smallest boundaries so that the Number One TAG is LARGE, LARGE and the last in the list (9th in this case) is tiny, tiny. Clicking a word in the tag cloud will produce an index page filled with articles that contain that term or tag. The more popular the TAG, the more articles will appear before you to browse through. It’s a remarkably simple concept, but the execution to create the script behind that behavior is very hard. Nathan Arthur should easily be considered borderline genius! In a Textpattern installation, you install any script here:

Textpattern uploaded Plugins happen in the Admin tab.

Considering TXP relies on CSS and HTML knowledge, the final tweaking of tru-tags and the cloud and overall look of your installation is based solely on your own understanding of the acronyms above. The installation is delightfully painless. I will now save this article as a Draft, get and install and configure the Editable portions of the tagging plugin and tell you how long that universally easy bit took…

Five minutes, Seventeen seconds plus 4/10ths

Installing tru-tags tag cloud for blog Textpattern: 5 minutes.

My Google Search through the nifty and noninvasive Dinarius Toolbar was, “tru-tags plugin TXP.” That took me to 1 the newly redesigned Truist Page by Nathan Arthur. That redirected me to 2 the Forums of support for Textpattern which in turn re-directed me back to 3 Truist’s download page where you’d better verify 4 that you have version 4.0.5 Textpattern installed.

Once verified, you can go to 5 the Download page where TONS and TONS of machine code can be copy/pasted into 6 described above Admin > Plugins and then 7 UPLOAD is a little red button at the bottom that you click. Once done, you are automatically taken to 8 the Plugins page where your installed toys are verifiable and viewable. Configuration, as I said, can last a lifetime or an hour or somewhere in between.

NATHAN ARTHUR IS BRILLIANT

I’ll give Nathan a chance to speak for himself here, but as for Dinarius, the website entity and GawkerComputers and a few others not mentioned, we thank you sincerely!

  1. I have over 200 articles to go back through and tag (it’s going to take some time to tag’em all correctly). Installation is easy and getting the initial display of tags is easy. CONFIGURING tag clouds, lists and RSS control and Related tag display is sick (both the good and bad meanings).

The power of tru-tags is seen in the length of the new instructions. I’ve put in a very lame-duck request for “Cliff Notes” for intimidated would-be users, but we’ll see how that goes. -I’m sure Nathan has nothing better to do that write instructions, again.

If you’re in to Textpattern and wonder why search engines aren’t indexing your site hard enough despite well-written articles, it’s the result of unused or under utilized KEYWORDS. Tru-tags is hands-down, the Primo, number-one solution to this dilemna. I’ll report back to that effect in one month.
